His father was a poor tenant farmer who, in spite of severe poverty, managed to provide his seven children with some formal education. Robert read widely and had a knowledge of French and Latin. He was also well acquainted with traditional Scottish songs and legends, thanks to his mother. By the time he began writing his early poetry, Burns had experienced such hard physical work as a farmer that his health was damaged permanently.
