He attended the Jesuit College at Stonyhurst and, after a journey to Switzerland, where he began to write poetry and read E.A. Poe, he enrolled the Edinburgh University to study medicine. Doyle graduated in 1881 and set up his first independent practice in the seaside seaside resort of Southsea, in Hampshire. The practice was slow to grow and to while away the hours the young doctor began to write adventure stories.
