He was first educated at Westminster School and then entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1654. In 1657 he moved to London where he married, joined the Royal Society and started his literary career publishing Heroic Stanzas on the Death of Oliver Cromwell, a panegyric on the Lord Protector.
